Know the Warning Signs of a Cavity

cavity-pain

Even with proper brushing and flossing, cavities happen to the best of us. Reports show that 92 percent of Americans have at least one cavity in their lifetime. It is important to know the signs and symptoms of a cavity, so that you can schedule an appointment with your Longmeadow dentist as soon as possible to get it checked out. The earlier you spot a cavity, the easier it is for your dentist to treat. Here are some telltale signs of a cavity:

Pain

Most often, cavities cause toothaches. If you experience pain in a tooth when you bite down or chew food, or anytime that tooth comes into contact with something, you most likely have a cavity. If the tooth hurts when you’re not chewing or touching it, the nerve in the tooth may be decaying and could even be in the process of dying. It is important to see your dentist right away if you experience pain in a tooth.

Sensitivity to Temperature and Sugar

Decaying teeth often become very sensitive to extremely hot and cold food and liquids, and sugary foods. If your teeth suddenly feel affected by temperature or begin to tingle while eating sugary foods, you might have a cavity.

Holes and Dark Spots

Cavities can cause visible small pits or holes to form in the teeth. Additionally, decaying teeth may start to discolor, appearing black or brown.

Persistent Bad Breath

The small holes associated with cavities create spaces for leftover food particles, causing bad breath and a sour taste in the mouth.

Bleeding While Brushing

Sometimes cavities occur between two teeth, causing gum tissue to grow in between them. This tissue can easily become injured while brushing, leading to bleeding in the mouth

Routine dental care is very important. Although good oral hygiene, a proper diet, and routine cleanings will deter the formation of cavities, they do not fully prevent them from occurring. If you think you have a cavity, please make an appointment with your Longmeadow dentist today.
