It’s Electric! What’s the Buzz on Electric Toothbrushes?

We’ve all seen plenty of commercials about electric toothbrushes. But are they really better than manual, old-fashioned brushes?

Benefits of Electric Toothbrushes

A more thorough cleaning – Bristles on a regular toothbrush can’t quite reach into all of the crevices between our teeth. But the rotation of the bristles on an electric toothbrush can reach much farther.

An easier cleaning – Using an electric toothbrush is much easier than using a manual. The rotating head does all of the work for you. You simply guide it to where it needs to go.

Battle against gingivitis and gum disease – Frequent brushing with an electric toothbrush combined with regular flossing can reduce your chances of developing gingivitis and gum disease.

How to Use an Electric Toothbrush

Using an electric toothbrush really does all the work for you. All you have to do is hold the toothbrush to teeth and gums for a moment, slide to the next area, and continue. Here are few other tips:

  • Hold it correctly – Hold the electric toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your gumline, where the gums and teeth meet.
  • Slide it around – Do not vigorously move the brush.
  • Don’t overload the brush with toothpaste – you only have to use a small amount of toothpaste.
  • Time it – When brushing manually, most of us probably don’t brush long enough. But with electric, you can just use of the timer on your electric toothbrush for the perfect amount of time.

But no matter what you choose, always make sure you consult with your dental professional first. Schedule your appointment with Longmeadow Family Dental Care soon.
